Artist's Comments

Here's something a little different. Another mini Frodo, but I think this one is a lot more fun than the first one.

This is part of a piece for Sideshow Collectibles that was unveiled this week, and will be going up for preorder today, Friday the 17th.

The diorama consists of 5 incredible Ringwraiths moving in towards Frodo from the scene in "Fellowship of the Ring" on Weathertop. I was asked to make the Frodo piece which is seperate from the Ringwraiths. Take a look at the incredible Wraith sculptures here: [link]

Just to make it clear, I DID NOT sculpt the Ringwraiths. They're bonechillingly awesome, and incredibly well done. I'm honored I got to sculpt a terrified Frodo to go along with the piece, because it's a wickedly cool diorama.

The multiple colors on Frodo are just due to different types of wax. the base is balsa foam with actual rocks and dirt, as well as some sculpted elements. Whatever gives you a convincing look! :)

The scale is 1/9. Frodo was probably about 5"-6" from head to foot. I really need to put a coin in for scale, or something. It's tough to tell what size he is.

thanks for looking

I knew it - when I saw the diarama a few days ago I was wondering who did such a great likeness of Frodo - bravo :)

Great sculpt Trev. I saw this on S.C.'s site the other day.
looks Fantastic!

A couple questions - are the different waxes used for varying degrees of texture?

What do you use to secure the dirt to the base so it doesn't remain in the mold?

Thanks.

Awesome job. Great likeness and gesture. A quick question about the various waxes. Do you use different waxes because of their various firmness and properties? or is there another reason for the different waxes?

Cheers!!

To be honest, I like your sculpture better than the ring wraiths. Flowing dark robes and swords could've been done by any awesome sculptor. But your's? ...with all the attention to exquisite detail given to everything from the buttons on Frodo's coat, to the nails on his toes, the grass on the ground, and the teeth set into his terrified face... it almost is like looking at a 3D still from the movies. You sir, have an wonderful gift!

Hey Alfred!
Let me just say, GREAT work on your Dr. Horrible statues! I have been meaning to leave you some comments!

To answer your question, yes, I use the different waxes for that reason. The hard wax is good for faces, or anything detailed, while the softer waxes are great for clothes or hair. Sometimes it just comes down to what I have available at my fingertips. :) You can achieve any of this stuff with just one type of wax! :) thanks man!!
